Palo Duro Canyon is a canyon system of the Caprock Escarpment located in the Texas Panhandle near the cities of Amarillo and Canyon. As the second-largest canyon in the United States, it is roughly 120 mi (190 km) long and has an average width of 6 mi (9.7 km), but reaches a width of 20 mi (32 km) at places. Its depth is around 820 ft (250 m), but in some locations, it increases to 1,000 ft (300 m). Palo Duro Canyon (from the Spanish meaning “hard stick”) has been named “The Grand Canyon of Texas” both for its size and for its dramatic geological features, including the multicolored layers of rock and steep mesa walls, which are similar to those in the Grand Canyon. It is part of Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

Cadillac Ranch is a public art installation and sculpture in Amarillo, Texas, US. It was created in 1974 by Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels, who were a part of the art group Ant Farm. The installation consists of ten Cadillacs buried nose-first in the ground.

Stop At: The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery, 7701 I-40 East, Amarillo, TX 79118, USA

The Big Texan Steak Ranch is a steakhouse restaurant and motel located in Amarillo, Texas, United States, which opened on the previous U.S. Route 66 in the 4500 block of East Amarillo Boulevard in 1960. It relocated to its present location on Interstate 40 in 1970. Fire gutted the west wing of the restaurant in 1976 and destroyed $100,000 in antiques. The restaurant reopened as a larger facility in 1977. The building is painted a bright yellow, with blue trim. A large bull statue advertises their “free” 72 oz. steak!

The turn of the century saw rapid development in the Texas Panhandle, ranging from the growth of the cattle industry to the discovery of oil and gas. Harrington House represents both eras. Built in 1914 by cattlemen John and Pat Landergin, the House was acquired in 1940 and preserved by Don and Sybil Harrington, leaders in the oil and gas industry and generous contributors to numerous philanthropic causes. Harrington House is a fine example of the Neoclassical style, with exquisite materials and workmanship prevalent throughout the home. The Reception Hall is resplendent with original tapestry wall covering, 18th century parquet de Verailles flooring, and much more.

“The Texas Panhandle War Memorial Center has a beautiful park. In the park we have monuments to the 1,550 panhandle service members who lost their lives in combat for our freedom. A Huey helicopter, F-100 Super-Sabre supersonic jet fighter-bomber, and one of the largest pieces of the deck of the USS Arizona in the world are on display. Inside our museum see artifacts from WWI through Afghanistan. We have a D-Day map, Battle of the Bulge map, Norden bombsight, drones used in the Gulf wars, and scale models of various WWII aircraft. Our Education Center features five computer kiosks with information on 11 US wars and conflicts from the Revolutionary War through Afghanistan. See our 1954 Willys Jeep and visit our gift shop.”
