Atlanta Trip Overview
The Civil Rights movement’s spiritual home is in Atlanta and in the Sweet Auburn district Martin Luther King Jr’s influence can still be seen today; this is where he had ‘his dream’ during a speech that has had a powerful impact on US race relations.
Racial inequality, segregation and discrimination was once state law and a policy firmly upheld in Atlanta and most areas in the south. Atlanta, however, always had a more forward-thinking approach even before the Civil Rights movement and in 1959 it desegregated public transport and had already appointed black officials.
From 1940-1970 Atlanta emerged as the centre for activism and led the way in calling for black civil liberties including voting rights and educational and economic opportunities
