The drive starts at the fascinating lava zone and continues through a large variety of things that you can see and report in a large petroglyph field and ends where the lava crosses the road in the sea.

It is a volcanic crater and one of the attractions along Chain of craters Road. This crater has been the site of three eruptions in recent history. The crater floor we see today is covered by a thin veneer of lava from the 1979 event.
