Mountain Cove Bicycle Ramble (Guided)

Chickamauga Trip Overview

This loop ranks among the favorite routes for local cyclists–and for good reason:

It’s remote with little traffic.

It’s generally flat to lightly rolling with just two notable hills but nothing long or steep.

And the scenery will keep us stopping again and again for photos–of barns, farms, old churches and the ever-present Lookout Mountain on the ride south and Pigeon Mountain on the ride back north.

The turnaround point is Mountain Cove Store, where we’ll have snacks and time to look forward to our ride back, where pizza and ice cream await.

If you’re a novice who has tired of the same old close-to-home routes but may not want to head out alone into new territory, this fully supported tour with support vehicle and ride-along guide is for you.

Private and custom versions of this tour are available.

Pass By: Chickamauga, Chickamauga, Georgia

In 1994, the National Register of Historic Places added Chickamauga’s McLemore Cove Historic District to its list of treasured locations.

The cove is named from Robert and John McLemore, sons of a white trader and a Cherokee mother. Along with its scenic beauty, McLemore Cove is known for antebellum structures, vast farmlands and houses dating back into the 1890s.

The cove is located about three miles south of the town of Chickamauga, in an area roughly bounded by Lookout and Pigeon Mountain.

Pass By: Pigeon Mountain, Georgia 30707, USA

Pigeon Mountain forms the backdrop to most of the return ride. Most of it is covered by a 20,657-acre state-owned Wildlife Management Area, most of it dense forest. While we see the mountain just from its base, the area features abundant wildlife, miles of trails, unique natural features, and gorgeous views.

Pass By: Lookout Mountain, Lookout Mountain, Georgia

Lookout Mountain, whose dense forests and craggy cliffs form the backdrop to most of the ride, is a mountain ridge from Tennessee through Georgia well into Alabama. Our ride is along the base starting about 15 miles south of Chattanooga. On November 24, 1863, during the American Civil War, the Battle of Lookout Mountain took place at the northern end with extensive troop movement atop and below the mountain.
