This half-day excursion begins with a short tour of the historic Fort Seward before embarking on a scenic drive from downtown Haines up the Haines Highway and into the Chilkat River Valley. Fort Seward was the first Army base in Alaska and still holds a commanding presence along the beachway.

Escape the crowds of the cruise ship in Haines State Forest, where we will explore the area around Flower Mountain. As we drive upwards of 25 miles along the Klehini River and over mountain meadows, you may spot swans, salmon, eagles, bears or moose along the way. As we crest above treeline, the route eases up and the views expand to encompass the surrounding peaks and glaciers. We’ll surely spot wildflowers and perhaps Ptarmigan or patches of snow on the upper alpine reaches of the route.
