A former sacrificial heiau (luakini) dedicated to the god Ku where human sacrifice was performed, then later rededicated by King Kamehameha to the god Lono as a temple of peace.

This is the location where King Kamehameha I transitioned into the next life, and also the site of ancient human sacrifice.

The lava rock cornerstones of Hawaii’s very first Christian church were formerly part of an ancient Hawaiian temple, built hundreds of years in the past. This newly introduced religion eventually led to events that are considered Hawaii’s civil war and the end of the ancient Kapu system.

Built on ancients grounds, the Kona Inn was responsible for ushering in the era of tourism in Kona. The site was formerly home to King Kamehameha II and is known as “papa’ula” or “red flats” as there may have been human sacrifice here as well. End the tour with a cleansing sage smudge at the new Big Island Ghost Tours booth.
