A visit to the site of the former French Opera House. Although the building burned down in 1919, between the Civil War and World War I the Opera House was the preeminent social space for local elite.
This open space in Armstrong Park was home to large gatherings of slaves and free people of color during the 19th century. These gatherings featured open markets, dancing, and drumming. Congo Square is often referred to as the birthplace of Jazz and was later home to the first New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
