September 11th and Irish Hunger Memorials Tour

New York Trip Overview

The 9/11 memorial is a beautiful, solemn, and thoughtful place for quiet reflection. It is also home to many other related memorials in the area that are just as poignant. As an art historian and artist, I will show you why memorials can take different design approaches and meanings.
This two hour walking tour will take you to:

– The FDNY memorial

– The Sphere

– America’s Response Monument

– The 9/11 memorial

– The Berlin Wall

– The Irish Hunger memorial

– St Paul’s Chapel

We can stop for a snack (and bathroom break!) at Brookfield Place. Please note the tour does not include the 9/11 museum, which has its own tours.

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: FDNY Memorial Wall, 124 Liberty St, New York City, NY 10006-1008

I will present this bronze relief memorial, and explain how the Ice Fund for Ground Zero played a part in its realization. You will learn about the choices made in the artwork, and what they tell you about the events of that day.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: America’s Response Monument, 97 12th Ave, New York City, NY 10014-1005

This often overlooked memorial is based on a photo from the Naval Academy, and photos of the special forces who were the first to fight in Afghanistan. I will explain how the artist worked to depict the horse and soldier as accurately as possible.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: The Sphere, Battery Park, New York City, NY 10004

Originally placed in the plaza between the World Trade Center towers, the Sphere was found in the debris after the attack. You will discover its journey from abstract art to a symbol of resilience.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum, 180 Greenwich St World Trade Center, New York City, NY 10007-0089

The visit explains the significance of all the elements on the public plaza: how the names of the victims appear along the waterfalls, why the trees were planted, where the survivor tree comes from, and the recent additions to the memorial.

Please note that the museum entrance is not included in this visit.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Battery Park City, Battery Park City, New York City, New York

We will stop at the Berlin Wall Segment donated to the city of New York by the German Consulate for the 15th anniversary of the fall of the wall. You will see a piece of history and understand how it can still affect us.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Irish Hunger Memorial, 290 Vesey St, New York City, NY 10281-1032

Extraordinary memorial to commemorate the tragic famine in Ireland, and raise awareness about hunger around the world. This memorial is part of a new design trend that aims to give you a full experience of an event. You will walk through a rural Irish landscape with an abandoned stone cottage, stone walls, fallow potato fields and the flora on the north Connacht wetlands.

Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: St. Paul’s Chapel, 209 Broadway b/t Fulton Street & Vesey Street, New York City, NY 10007-2977

St. Paul’s Chapel served as a site of the rescue efforts after the 9/11 attack. It was turned into a makeshift memorial after the events of that day, and many of the objects are still on display.

Duration: 10 minutes
