Stop At: Fraunces Tavern, 54 Pearl St, New York, NY 10004, USA

Fraunces Tavern is a landmark museum and restaurant in New York City, situated at 54 Pearl Street at the corner of Broad Street. The location played a prominent role in history before, during and after the American Revolution, serving as a headquarters for George Washington, a venue for peace negotiations with the British, and housing federal offices in the Early Republic. It has been owned since 1904 by Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York Inc., which carried out a major conjectural reconstruction, and claim it is Manhattan’s oldest surviving building. The museum interprets the building and its history, along with varied exhibitions of art and artifacts. The tavern is a tourist site and a part of the American Whiskey Trail and the New York Freedom Trail.

This museum is a branch of the esteemed Smithsonian Institute. You might be familiar with its sister museum, of the same name, in DC. It certainly deserves a visit, if you’ve got time!

Stop At: Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, 1 Bowling Green, New York, NY 10004, USA

Built-in the popular Beaux-Arts style of the time, this was originally a Custom House.

Stop At: Bowling Green, Broadway & Whitehall Street, New York City, NY 10004

This lovely bit of greenery is Bowling Green, New York City’s oldest park. Long before New York was New York, the Native American tribes of the area used this space for council meetings.

Stop At: Charging Bull (Wall Street Bull), 26 Broadway, New York City, NY 10004-1703

Sculpted in 1989 by Arturo Di Modica, the bull has a bit of a peculiar history. You see, Arturo didn’t actually have permission to place this sculpture here… or anywhere! He just pulled up to the New York Stock exchange with the bull in his truck and unloaded it illegally in front of the exchange.

Commissioned by an asset management company and sculpted by Kristen Visbal, Fearless Girl intended to celebrate empowering women.

The church itself has been around for over 300 years but its first incarnation was much more modest than what you see today.

The New York Stock Exchange is an American stock exchange located at 11 Wall Street, Lower Manhattan, New York City, New York. It is by far the world’s largest stock exchange by market capitalization of its listed companies at US$30.1 trillion as of February 2018.

George Washington took the oath of office to become the very first President of the United States within these walls.

When construction of this iconic building began in 1928, its developer George Ohrstrom had a very specific goal in mind: he wanted it to be the tallest building in the world. At 71 stories, he succeeded… for about 2 months.

The cube signifies chance, like the rolling of dice … the cube is that man-made pile of carbon blocks by which he had learned to simulate nature’s processes.

In September 2011, thousands of protestors gathered here and along Wall Street to protest the growing wealth inequality plaguing the country.

The 9/11 Memorial honors the 2,977 innocent men, women, and children killed when two hijacked airplanes flew into the World Trade Center buildings.

Built-in 1766, this is the oldest surviving chapel in Manhattan. It’s also home to the first monument ever commissioned by the United States: that stone pillar and urn set against the window.

The striking neo-gothic architecture takes after the Gothic architecture of the middle ages, particularly medieval churches and cathedrals.

This park was originally the town commons of early New York City and has been host to plenty of important demonstrations and celebrations over the years.

Behind City Hall is the Tweed Courthouse, home to the New York Department of Education.

Isn’t it a pretty sight? And trust me, the inside is just as beautiful as the outside. But this was a problem for New Yorkers when it was built, back in the mid-1800s.

Stop At: Brooklyn Bridge, New York City, NY 10038

That brings us to Centre Street and the end of my tour. Straight ahead you should see Brooklyn Bridge, the famous structure connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn. Built in 1883, this was once the longest suspension bridge in the world. It spans 6,000 ft across the river and sees 10,000 people cross every day.
