When Midland emerged in 2017, it seemed like the last thing mainstream Nashville was looking for was three guys sporting ‘staches and embroidered Western wear while playing tunes that combined country-rock harmonies with an old-school outlaw sensibility. But that’s exactly what the trio had to offer. And somehow, they managed to connect with country audiences in a big way (either despite or because of their trend bucking, depending on how you look at it). Their debut single, “Drinkin’ Problem,” went platinum and hit No. 4 on the country charts, while their first album, On the Rocks, made it all the way to No. 2. The album generated another big country hit with the track “Burn Out,” proving to everyone in Nashville that the next big thing didn’t have to be just like the last big thing.
